Beverly Lucille Cassin

A miracle of modern times.

Welcome Beverly Lucille Cassin

Bevy Lu Comes Home!

Hello all! I know I haven't been online in a while and I just wanted to give a short update to a long story. Beverly Lucille, a.k.a. Bevy Lu, made it home in July and having her home has been the most wonderful thing in the world. Every day is a new discovery and my heart bursts at the seams with every smile, coo, squawk, poop, roll over and scoot attempt. BevyLu is doing very well and now it's just follow ups with her docs to make sure things keep moving in an upwards fashion. Here are some of my favorite moments with my snuggle bug!

Happy Two Months Birthday Bevy Lu!

Update - January 16th, 2017

Hello Family and Friends,

There are not enough “thank yous” to express how much we appreciate the love, support and generosity we have received from all of you since the birth of Beverly Lucille (Bevy, Bev, Lucy, Lulu and, most affectionately, BevyLu). We have been through a roller-coaster of emotions as we’ve watched Bevy rise and fall just to rise again during her treatments here in Maryland. To see a little body endure what she has endured is heartbreaking…but to see her overcome and power through blown veins, surgical implantation of a central line, extubation, surgical removal of the blood that was on her brain from birth and, just recently, removal of the excess fluid that had gathered around her brain –all while under 2 lbs – is overwhelmingly uplifting. From the time she was born Patrick and I said that she was a fighter and she has made us very proud each day.

The medical teams she has been surrounded by at, both, Anne Arundel Medical Center and Johns Hopkins Hospital (where we are currently), have been extraordinary. They have not only offered their expertise, but also companionship and comfort at some of our most worrisome moments. Though much of Bevy’s progress is owed to them, we can’t ignore the amount of energy that was extended from all of you. Every thought, prayer, text, call, email and letter that was sent helped us get through the next day and we passed all that good energy along to our Bevy.

BevyLu is now almost 7 weeks old. She was born at 23 weeks and 3 days. When she was born she was just over a pound and 12 inches long. She is now 2 lbs, 6oz and 14 inches long. She’s gone from breathing on a ventilator to breathing with a nasal cannula at 21% oxygen. She takes in about 168mL of breast-milk each day (liquid gold as they call it in the hospital) and her bones and muscles are getting stronger because of it. She can be feisty as all get-out when she’s interrupted from her nap, but she is the best cuddle-bug during kangaroo care. For a little girl who had level 3 and level 4 blood on her brain and hydrocephalus, she has surprised us and her medical team each step of the way.

BevyLu currently has what’s called a subgaleal shunt in her head. It was placed in after her lavage (removal of the blood on her brain) and drainage of the excess liquid around her brain. This shunt is temporary and will collect any extra fluid that gathers into a reservoir just underneath her skin to later be absorbed by her skin. The effects of this drain will determine whether she’ll need a more permanent shunt when she is at full term (end of March). Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers. We can’t wait to bring her home so that she can really experience the love from all of you.

Thank you for everything.

Love,
Cheryl, Patrick and BevyLu

In times of extreme joy, there are sometimes challenges that require support from friends, family, loved ones, and those who believe in helping their fellow souls. Recently, Cheryl Tomblin and Patrick Cassin welcomed Beverly Lucille to this world. Although this is an amazing life event for them, little "Bevy Lu" blessed us with her presence much sooner than anticipated. The cost of care and monitoring for this beloved baby over the coming months has already presented itself to be a very heavy financial load. A load that their family and extended family through love have assisted with and will continue to do so. The Veltway Music Collective and Veltway Corp. are stepping up to raise funds for our dear friends, Patrick and Cheryl, who are valued and loved members of the Veltway's artistic community...However, we cannot do it alone.

In this time of need, we are asking for any donation that you can afford as means of supporting the special medical attention required to make sure that Beverly Lucille continues to grow and develop during the critical months ahead. Your contribution to this fund will go directly to the medical care, extended care accommodations, and general living costs for Cheryl, Patrick, and beautiful little Bevy Lu.

Strength and support from our extended community helps build a sustainably solid foundation for continuous growth for us ALL. Please consider helping these amazing people get through these tough times and show some love for Bevy Lu. Thank you!
